Who thought a couple young cats from Surrey could break so big in the electronic music scene? Ok, for all my Western Canadian peeps conjuring up certain images and dirty jokes about our beloved Vancouver suburb, please put those preconceived notions behind you.
Natives of Reigate, Surrey, in the UK, the Lawrence brothers, Howard and Guy, first smashed onto the scene with their 2013 hit ‘Latch’. Featuring the soulful vocals of a then relatively unknown fellow countryman, Sam Smith, the song had a mutual consensus among house heads and pop lovers. This song fit great near the end of sets as a sexy dip in energy before lighting things up for the final stretch of tracks for the night.
Fast forward seven years and smack dab in the middle of one of the most, let’s say, interesting years for entertainment, music, and humanity, and this Grammy-nominated duo have cooked up another diverse spread of tracks on their latest offering, ENERGY. If you’re familiar with the group, you’ve probably already heard the low-pitched vocal vibes of their single ‘Get Close’.
Brimming with collaborations from the likes of Kelis, Common, and Mick Jenkins, ENERGY is fixing to be a burner, indicated by the early release of several tracks on the iTunes preorder tip, including a hip house high tempo bumper featuring slowthai on MC duties. The deluxe version seems to be a double album with the shorter of the two (9 tracks vs. 11) featuring remixes by MJ Cole and a couple songs with Grammy-nominated Khalid, who has been tearing up the pop and R&B charts for the last few years.
Expected release date is August 28th, 2020.
