Sidepiece

It’s a brand new year and the dust is finally starting to settle after an incredibly busy holiday season.   My intention during December was to put together a “Best Of” to round out the year in music from my experience, but my show schedule didn’t leave enough creative juices in the tank to put any decent effort into it.  So, I’m gonna leave 2017 where it is and start looking to the future.

I’m gonna start by shining a bit of light on a great producer whose music you’ve probably heard, but aren’t too familiar with the mind behind his thumping productions.  Michael Crooms is an Atlanta-based producer who has worked with the likes of Bubba Sparxxx, Ying Yang Twins and remixed some of the biggest stars in the game.  Most people know him by his stagename, Mr. Collipark.  For myself, I’ve grown to appreciate his production style from his work on several remixes I have added to my crates through the past couple years.  His twerk style beats ooze with deep 808 goodness, crispy drum tops and stylized vocal edits.   His remix work for global superstars such as, Justin Bieber, Mike Posner and The Chainsmokers has put him on my radar, but it is his latest rework of a relative unknown (at least to me), Pokey Bear, that I’ve been feeling lately.  I’m a fan of new R&B that takes a more traditional approach to songwriting and production, like Leon Bridges and Anderson Paak.  Mr. Collipark puts a modern club twist on this jam.   I couldn’t find a link on YouTube for the remix, so I uploaded one myself with the remix.  Unfortunately, YouTube isn’t playing and removed it within 24 hours.. Haha… It’s worth checking out if you can find it, though.  Here’s another one of his joints with the Ying Yang Twins and the original Pokey Bear joint.

The Original…..

I’ve been feeling this next collabo with A$AP Ferg and hip hop legend, DJ Premier.  Primo’s classic production supplies the backbone for Ferg’s bars to tingle through, with a backdrop mined with samples from the Continental IV and Fleetwood Mac.  Ferg spits some realness, paying homage to Guru and cuts through like a ginsu with lines like: Primo put the soul in it / I made the track hot / In this thing forever got the game in a padlock / I just want something real, I’m tired of the ass shots / Don’t wanna go to the club, I’m tired of them trap spots.  Ferg’s laid back tenor bounces well over this proper beat.

These next three guys have been making beautiful music together for years now.  I’m a fan.  Krafty Kuts,  Chali 2na & Dynamite MC?  Nuff said.  See ya next week……
